what about the weekend? we'll talk about that coming up. >> live 880 traffic near the oakland comes. everything is smooth right now on the commute between hayward and downtown oakland. we could see some pretty big delays later on this weekend through half moon bay. we'll tell you why coming up. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. it's friday, october 12. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm frank mallicoat. 5:00 on the nose. we are going back to the breaking story at santa clara county at the top of the hour. san jose firefighters are at the scene of a large house fire still burning in an unincorporated area of cambrian park. >> the fire department says some explosions could be heard from inside the house which one of the owners told them contained live ammunition. the fire on carlson avenue was reported just before 4:00 this morning. two people who lived in the home were taken to the hospital for treatment of burns. no word on their conditions at this time. crews are still out there. just seconds ago we saw flames shooting from the roof of the house. fire crews were spraying water

on that so they are trying to get that fire under control but you can see the house is damaged. >> we'll have more later in the show. the so-called san jose serial arsonist continues his dumpster trash burning again. flames were put out at delna manor dumpster by residents in the area. this is the 10th such fire in three weeks. let's check the weather. it's friday. all of us are look forward to the weekend. >> it was very cool yesterday. we had more showers around the bay area yesterday even more lightning strikes but things looking like they are starting to settle down a bit still lots of clouds and scattered light showers most located in the south bay over the mountains. nonetheless, it looks like things will be winding down today. hi-def doppler showing you some of that moisture as it is rotating through the bay area

right now but it looks like it's going to start to dissipate and slide further to the east. drizzle approaching the coastline so the roads are still wet. so be careful out there driving in. that area of low pressure that's bringing the unsettled weather over the past couple of days and moved through southern california finally going to kick eastward as it moves out. high pressure is coming in, in time for the weekend so we'll see a gradual warming trend over the weekend and eventually next week maybe a little mini heat wave before we get back into talking about more rain in the bay area. temperatures outside right now under mostly cloudy skies into the 50s just about everywhere. 80s in the interior valleys today. we are struggling to get to the mid-60s in livermore. 66 in san jose. 62 in san francisco and about 60 degrees in pacifica with some partly cloudy skies there. as we look toward the next couple of days we are going to warm up saturday.

sunday looks nice, 80s popping in the valleys. weak system drops in on monday that may bring clouds and hold the temperatures down but after that, we could very well see those offshore winds kicking in. if that happens, maybe temperatures back into the upper 80s, maybe low 90s as we head into thursday. 60s maybe near 70 degrees out toward the coastline. >> let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> fire crews are on scene at west portal. we are hearing one alarm. we are gathering more information and give you more in a little bit. live look at traffic sensors on highway 4 westbound and eastbound so far looks okay antioch and concord. elsewhere live look at the golden gate bridge. they may have picked up roadwork at the span southbound 101 from the north tower towards the toll plaza. i saw some lane change crews

earlier so we have more southbound 101 lanes open towards doyle drive. so lawrence said we have the big pumpkin festival at half moon bay this weekend saturday and sunday so this always causes pretty big traffic tie- ups especially on 92 and highway 1. so heads up expect some extra gridlock there. elsewhere bart so far on time. no issues so all those trains heading towards downtown san francisco look to be on schedule. that's a check of traffic and weather together every 10 minutes. back to you guys. >> thank you. here's a joy and somethe giants pulled off a miracle comeback taking three in a row from the reds in cincinnati. sadness. they move on to the nlcs. then it was the as turn at home last night against the tigers. sellout crowd filled the coliseum last night but the star in this game was on the mound really for the tigers. the reigning cy young award winner justin verlander pitched a complete game shutout. he was huge. as only four hits, lost to the tigers 6-0 in their finale but what a season it was.

>> i think we surprised a lot of people outside of this clubhouse. obviously we would have liked to have continued on. the goal it is to make it all the way get that ring on your finger and have the parade. but it comes to a end for us. difficult to swallow. >> the tigers advance to the alcs against either the orioles or the yankees who battle it out in their game 5 later tonight. how about the giants? they became the first time in big league history to win three straight on the road it close out a five-game series. it was a nail biter. posey with a big grand slam to make it 6-0 in the fifth. giants beat the reds 6-4. they will start the nlcs sunday on the road in washington or at home against st. louis. those two teams have at it tonight in their game 5, as well.

paining up for lost ground. >> reporter: as for who won, it depends on how you ask. instant polls taken rye after the debate are mixed. -- in a cbs news poll of uncommitted voters, 50% thought the vice president run, 31% sided for ryan and 19% called it a tie. 56% thought biden would be an effective president if necessary compared with 49% for ryan. not surprisingly, both sides claimed victory. mitt romney's campaign said biden seemed off balance and strange. the president's team said the debate exposed the risks of electing a romney/ryan ticket. the next presidential debate is tuesday. randall pinkston, cbs news, danville, kentucky. and we can expect those poll results to change in the coming days as the samples are increased and the polling organizations dig deeper on the impact of these first and only vice-presidential debates. reporting live in danville, kentucky, i'm randall pinkston, back to you. >> randall, it's certainly interesting to watch a lot more sparks in this debate than the

presidential debate. what were considered the strong and weak points of the candidate? >> well, after president obama's performance last week democrats have to show they are willing to fight and also defend the president's record. biden certainly did that. for mitt ryan, he had to stand up there with one of the most famous most powerful democrats in the nation his first time out on that kind of stage and he held his own showed a command of issues, showed that he could take apart some of the obama administration's record. meanwhile, vice president biden also did his part to defend that record and show some of the inconsistencies in the romney/ryan proposals for the nation. >> let's just quickly talk about the moderator. last time the presidential debate jim lehrer caused a little flak for his moderating skills. how do you think martha did? >> everything that i have read and certainly that i saw last night indicated that she maintained command and control

california science center at exposition partnering. cool to watch there. the 170,000-pound spacecraft will eventually be on display at the museum. >> this is a very tricky process. 4 transporters will help negotiate the shuttle along a 12-mile loop where in some cases it will be just inches away from building. >> some places the wing tips will extend beyond the boundaries of the streets over the sidewalk. >> just move slowly. we tell people to open their windows as the wings come by. >> that's why it's slow. 2 miles per hour trees other obstacles have to be removed along the route to accommodate the unusually wide load. the shuttle will travel at speeds up to 2 miles per hour. that's a crawl. >> late last night it's going to take 48 hours. they have to maneuver it and push it. another chance for people to

say good-bye. >> that's a traffic mess in l.a., too. >> that's a never-ending good- bye for that shuttle. >> we have breaking news in san francisco. streets may be impact national area. it's a restaurant fire and we have an exact address 9 west portal avenue the closest cross street is uloas. it's a one-alarm fire close to the twin peaks tunnel. there may be muni delays, as well. fire from the roof broke out around 4:15 and no injuries at this point so that's the good news. we'll continue to watch that. in the meantime on our major freeways we have a problem blocking up to two lanes of traffic. southbound 880 approaching 23rd so this accident just came in within the last 15 minutes. again two lanes blocked.

if you head farther south towards milpitas here's a live look at 880/237. they picked up some overnight roadwork. so now you're good to go. both directions between san francisco and marin. that's a check of "timesaver traffic." for more on your forecast, we have something for everyone. scattered showers outside most of that in the south bay. >> reports of sfo of scattered light showers. we'll keep that light activity early on today but then it starts to taper off throughout the day. and then we'll start to talk about some partial clearing toward the afternoon but no matter what it will stay cool. these temperatures running well below average for this time of year and then gradual warming as high pressure starts to sneak in here for the weekend. i think we'll see more sunshine and maybe a return to some 80s at least as we get into sunday in spots inland. right now showers coming to an end this morning and then this

low finally kicking eastward. as it moves out it will drag the moisture with it. high pressure will sneak in here. things will settle down. looks like there's nice weather to come starting out damp in spots on this friday morning. we have scattered light showers and sprinkles approaching the coastline. into the afternoon you clear out the skies a bit and clouds move in overnight so we are not cloud-free for the weekend but at least we'll see more sunshine toward the afternoo hours. showers at yosemite and 63 also into lake tahoe. around the bay area temperatures only in the 60s this afternoon. so well below average. usually some of the numbers sneaking up to the 80s but we'll get back there towards sunday. maybe more clouds on the way on monday but then a good heat wave developing as we look toward the middle of next week. maybe 80s and low 90s returning to the bay area. that's a look at weather, guys. back to you. to a developing story now out of north san jose. a man was shot and killed overnight. it's the city's 37th homicide of the year.

anne makovec has the latest. >> reporter: it happened on a bar behind me called aloe bar. officers at the scene right now. athe 1:45 this morning a man was shot here at this vietnamese coffeehouse this morning, not sure whether it was inside or outside the bar. he was pronounced dead around 2 a.m. now police haven't said much when it comes to a motive in the shooting. they will wait until the victim's family is notified to identify the victim. they don't have suspects right now in custody. anne makovec, cbs. >> thank you. 14 people have now died from that rare meningitis outlook. at least 170 more have come down sick. the outbreak is linked to tainted steroid shots made by a

company in framingham, massachusetts. the steroid was given to nearly 14,000 people to treat back pain. that company could face criminal charges. a new year means new prices for a stamp. a first class stamp in january will cost 46 cents up a penny. postal officials plan to raise the rates for priority mail services. the postal regulatory commissions will review the prices before they become effective january 27. what if your employee or coworker called in sick to work because he got upset watching the hunger games? >> well, it's been used i'm sorry michelle. you can't use that one. it's one of career builder's list of the most creative sick calls. we have a few more that might make you laugh. i can't come to work because my dog had a nervous breakdown. my toe is stuck in a faucet. >> this is my favorite one. >> i know. this is good. >> i'm having my dead grandmother dug up for a police investigation. >> that would be a good idea to stay home i guess.

time now is 5:30. right now, san jose firefighters they are on the scene at a house fire this morning. we are still getting details on that. this is a picture of crews working out at this house fire here. you can see flames just shooting out of the roof. >> two people have been taken to the hospital. two people inside that home. also some live ammunition inside the house, as well. we're going to kick it down to matt bigler live outside that home right now with the latest. matt, what can you tell us? >> reporter: i can tell you that this fire was just brought under control officially a few minutes ago. up until then there were flames at the corner of the house where you can see it smoking. the damage has been done. this house almost completely gutted by flames probably a total loss. early this morning, just before 4:00, neighbors reported an explosion at the house and some of them reported hearing pops. as it turns out, the owner of the house says he was storing ammunition inside the house.

that was likely what was causing the noises. it's not known if that was the cause of the fire. we just heard some pops just now. but that is something that fire investigators will be looking into. two people were injured in the fire. they sustained some sort of burns on their bodies. they were taken to the hospital. it's not known what degree the burns are. fire crews said they were walking and talking when they showed up. this is a two-alarm fire, now under control. again, ammunition appears to be inside the house which was problematic for fire crews. live from the scene, matt bigler for cbs 5. >> thank you. we are going to toss it to elizabeth now. obviously, this fire apparently is affecting -- it will be affecting people who want to ride muni this morning. >> yeah. we have actually just learned from the fire apartment it's a three-alarm fire and it continues to grow. it's a fire at west portal. the closest cross street is u loa. the building is housing the squat and gobble cafe. there are no injuries in the fire but the biggest problem is

near the west portal muni tunnel so yeah, michelle just mentioned some big muni delays. no trains are being allowed inbounded or outbound so right now they are working to set up a bus bridge again at muni serving west portal. no inbounded or outbound service. we are sending a crew to the scene. so we'll give you an update there. traffic collision in oakland, just issued a traffic alert southbound 880 approaching 23rd, stacking up towards 16th and growing. back to you guys. >> thank you. we are following a developing story in north san jose. the search is on for the suspect behind the city's 37th homicide of the year. officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound in the 1700 block of rogers avenue around 2:00 this morning. the victim died at the scene. investigators have not identified the suspect or a motive at this point. the identity of the man killed is also being withheld. new this morning, fire damaging a house in san

francisco's mission district. it happened early this morning. the flames reported about 2:00 at 38 fair avenue. that's near the corner of mission and valencia. one person in the house did manage to get out safely. the fire department says the fire started on a deck and went inside. for a second day in a row the san jose serial arsonist targets the same location once again the trash bin in the same area near the delna manor lane. it was set on fire last night. flames were put out before crews arrived once again even though the fires are small, firefighters saying they could easily get out of control. this is the 10th such fire in three weeks. people in a vallejo neighborhood are back home this morning after explosives were found in the area. a bomb squad detonated small bombs around georgia street

we stand for that. morning in los angeles... ae space shuttle endeavour is d through city streets, to its retirement home. these quite the spectacle. this is this morning in l.a. some live pictures as the space shuttle endeavour is moving through city streets to its retirement home rather slowly as we mentioned, live images as endeavour is being transferred from l.a. international airport to the california science center exposition park. that's an 11-mile journey. the 170,000-pound spacecraft will be on display for museum visitors eventually. four computer controlled transporters are negotiating the shuttle along the route where, in some cases, it comes just inches away from buildings and signals. i guess they have to chop down a lot of trees as well to get it you there. >> you can see people lining up on the streets there. they expect about a mill people out there for this little tour through the streets of l.a.

>> the farewell continues for the shuttle. but quite a sight there. >> in business, wall street is steady this morning with futures up just a fraction of a percent right now on this friday. erica ferrari of cbsmoneywatch.com joins us now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. asian markets were mixed following more worries about weak corporate earnings. tokyo's nikkei shed a fraction, hong kong's hang seng added half a percent. the labor department says the number of people filing new claims for unemployment fell sharply. it's the lowest level in 4.5 years. but the news did little to move the stock market thursday. the dow was down nearly 19 points. ♪ [ music ] >> the nasdaq fell two points. stock futures point to a higher opening on wall street as the nation's biggest bank jpmorgan chase reported higher-than- expected profits in the 3rd quarter. a jump in mortgage sales helped the bank net $5.3 billion. that's up 36% from a year ago

and gobble reporter. flames are seen shooting from the roof. that's the address right there 9 west portal avenue. the closest cross street is uloa. west portal is shut down in the area. fortunately we are not hearing about any injuries. what is being impacted is muni possibly because it's right there by the west portal tunnel so inbounded and outbound service you could see delays. if there are delays it would impact the l line and k line across that stretch. so again we are sending our own crew to the scene. we'll let you know as soon as we get more information and live pictures. in the meantime we are following a major accident sounds like on freeways there in oakland. southbound 880 approaching 23rd. they just issued a traffic alert within the last few minutes. so you can see our speed sensors are slow across that stretch jammed solid to at least 16th and growing. they had to block off two lanes. that's why it's so busy. past 23rd, then things are moving okay near the oakland coliseum but you will notice your drive time is impacted.

northbound 880 looks okay. quick look at the bay bridge and golden gate commutes. no meter at the bay bridge so no big delays, golden gate okay and san mateo bridge fine too towards the high-rise. that's a check of your "timesaver traffic." let's go to lawrence. looks like maybe a little moisture in some of our traffic cameras. >> yeah. still winding down outside right now. we have some drizzle and had some reports of light showers. check out hi-def doppler, showers into the east bay now and showers at sfo, as well. so we are going to wind the rain down today. by the afternoon we'll see partial clearing but these temperatures are going to stay very cool outside grab a light jacket or sweater with you heading out today. then it looks like a gradual warming trend as we look toward the weekend as high pressure finally builds into the bay area. this low pressure system has been meandering along the coastline over the past few days bringing wraparound thunderstorms in the bay area
